Conservation Site

There is a  Conservation Site in Spooner Row which is situated near to the ruins of Wick Hall.  It is currently operational under the Environmental Stewardship Scheme organised by Natural England as part of an agri-environment programme that provides funding for farmers and landowners to deliver effective environmental management on their land.

The conservation work undertaken by the farmer here has been carried out  to create a grassland area on the ancient moated site of Wick Hall, for hedgerow restoration and for creating a foraging habitat for ground nesting birds such as the grey partridge.  The grey partridge is a rare and protected species and is on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.  Unfortunately, its population has declined by 88% between 1977 and 2002 and continues to decline.

From the paths on the Conservation Walk, which is part of the Environmental Stewardship Scheme, you can view the work that has been carried out.
